Dad's Merchant Marine Days Part 2

The pictures in dad's album at this point did not appear to be in chronological order and, right or wrong, I've organized them as I thought they should be.  I have made no changes to his original album.  When he's named people or places, I've left his notes in the pictures.  I've included links to some locality pictures should the reader want to know more about those places.

21 June 1947
I don't know if every sailor to Argentina had one of these certificates or only those going ashore.

Have you noticed the cars in some of these pictures?  They are amazing!

The photo album pages with the Canadian pictures are dated September 1947 and Dad is still on the United States ship, the S.S. Arthur J. Tyrer.

Loading and unloading bauxite apparently leaves quite a mess!
Port Alfred is near Quebec.

I don't find anything written about when Dad was in Savannah, Georgia but these are pictures he included in his album.  Post publication update....Dad was in and out of Savannah, Georgia several times in 1950.

I can imagine the hilarity and solemnity of this Line Crossing event!

Finding this certificate in my family memorabilia collection leads me to believe that my father did not graduate high school before he joined the Merchant Marines.

Although not dated, this is obviously a Letter of Reference given to my dad when he left the S.S. Arthur J. Tyrer.

I found several ship's manifests on ancestry.com that listed my dad as a crew member from November 1945 to January 1950 aboard the United States ships, S.S. Thomas W. Bickett, S.S. Argentina, S.S. Marine Tiger, and the S.S. Pan American.  They indicate departures from various European ports to New York, New York and Providence, Rhode Island.  This album does not include  photographs identified with those ships.

More Line Crossing events!

The Domain of the Golden Dragon certificate was awarded when crossing the international date line at the equator.   I don't know where Dad, a Private in the United States Army, was going in October 1951 aboard the United States Navy Ship Gen. Wm. Weigel, but I'm guessing South Korea.

On 10 November 1954, Dad, now a Sergeant in the United States Army, was awarded the Royal Order of Atlantic Voyageurs certificate for crossing the Atlantic Ocean aboard the United States Navy Ship, the Gen. R. M. Blatchford, en route to Bremerhaven, Germany.

My next post will include a collection of photos of dad's friend, Gil, from this album that I haven't published yet.
