Robert was
the second of eight children born to John More and Elizabeth “Betty” Taylor More. When he was six-weeks old, he immigrated with
his parents and brother to America. They made their home first at New York City
where his father was assisting a friend in a grocery store. The following
spring, the family relocated to a site near to where today is known as Hobart, New York. In June 1777, due to the
unrest that would become the Revolutionary War, the family relocated to
Catskill, New York. In 1786, the family set out to return to their first home
but settled Moresville, New York instead. Moresville today is known as Grand
Gorge. Robert married to Susanna Fellows about 1793, presumably at Moresville. They
made their home about three miles away where Robert had cleared land and built
a log cabin for his bride. Robert and Susanna were the parents of nine
children; David Fellows More, twins Lois More and Elizabeth More (both of whom
died in infancy), Alexander More, Edward A. More, William More, Henry Fellows
More, James More, and Lois Ann More. His wife died in 1824 and Robert married
next to Mary “Polly” Moffatt in 1825, location unknown. Robert and Mary had no
children. Robert lived most of his adult life on his farm which he had added to over the
years until he owned about 430-acres. In 1832, Robert relocated to Prattsville,
New York where he had purchased a fine farm. He was a staunch Presbyterian and
remembered as honest and upright. He was gentlemanly and unassuming. He was
small in person but, like a native Highlander, he was agile and sturdy. Robert
is John More Association, head of the Robert line, cousin #2 and is my fifth
great-uncle. He is buried in a family plot in Upper Cemetery at Prattsville.
