George Wheeler Tupper

Died 9 May 1972 at Media, Delaware County, Pennsylvania
George was the only child of Wilbur M. Tupper and Harriet Preston Wheeler Tupper. He was raised at Roxbury where his father was a house painter and his mother was a librarian. He relocated to Schenectady, New York about 1912 where he served in the New York Guard for two years. George, a Robert line cousin, married to Angie Preston, a Jean line cousin, on 16 February 1916 at Roxbury. George and Angie were the parents of one child, Elizabeth Preston Tupper. George was a clerk in the employ of Frank Enderlin when he enlisted for World War I military service. He was assigned to Company B, 302 Field Signal Battalion and served overseas from 29 March 1918 until 30 April 1919. He was honorably discharged on 9 May 1919. Upon his return to Roxbury, he was a painter and active in his community as a Justice of the Peace and a member of Dudley Post 686, American Legion. He, with his wife and young daughter, relocated to Tupper Lake, New York and then to Altamont, New York about 1925 where he was the proprietor of a sporting goods store. They returned to Roxbury about 1930 where he was an insurance agent and an auctioneer. They relocated to Schenectady in the early 1940s where he was employed by General Electric Company and returned to Roxbury about 1953 when he resumed his career as an auctioneer. He was a popular speaker and presenter at community organizations and knowledgeable about many subjects. Angie died in 1966 and George married next to widow Josephine Maynard Gilbert Sanford on 31 August 1967 at Cooperstown, New York. They made their home at Stamford, New York in the Sanford family home on Main Street. George’s daughter, Elizabeth, had married to William Thomas Griffiths, Junior in 1942 and resided at Media at the time of George’s death.
