Howard Chauncey Smith

Born 7 June 1874 at Ashland, Greene County, New York
Died 5 May 1941 at Catskill, Greene County, New York

Howard was the third of ten children born to Chauncey Smith and Aravesta Lee Lewis Smith. He was raised first at Ashland where his father was a dry goods merchant. The family relocated to Catskill sometime between 1875 and 1880 where his father was a retail grocer. Howard married to Carrie Stevens Crawford on 30 October 1895 at Catskill. They made their home first on Summit Avenue at Catskill and, by 1905, had relocated permanently to their home at 58 William Street. Howard was the owner of a retail and wholesale grocery at Catskill. He had been a member of the village board of trustees, trustee and elder at the Presbyterian church; a member of Board of Managers of Greene County, a trustee of Catskill Savings Bank, the director of Tanners National Bank, a member of Board of Education, and served on the advisory board of the building of Catskill Water Works. Howard was a member of Catskill Chapter, #285, Royal Arch Masons; Catskill Lodge #468, Free and Accepted Masons; Cyprus Temple of Albany; and Lafayette Commandery of Hudson. He died at his home on William Street, where he had been largely restricted to as a result of heart disease, and was buried at Town of Catskill Cemetery. Howard and Carrie were the parents of two children; Howard Crawford Smith, who died before his first year, and Genevieve Lewis Smith. Howard is John More Association Jean Line cousin #5.10.13 and my third cousin, three times removed.
