1934 3 12 Olive Schnack to Harriet Burgett

Spelling and grammar may change as I transcribe.  This letter originates in Laurens, Otsego County, New York.

My grandmother, 'Olive' Letha Rose Schnack wrote this letter to her 'Aunt Hattie', Harriet More Burgett.  'Walt' was Olive's husband, Jochim Walter Schnack.  'Bea' was Olive's sister, Beatrice May Rose Camp.  "F" was Olive's sister, Florence May Rose Lawler.  Florence's children at that time were Robert 'Bobbie' Leroy Lawler, 'John' More Lawler, and 'James' Clayton Lawler.  'Vivian' was Olive's daughter, Vivian Eleanor Schnack Cope.  'Clif' was Olive's brother, Clifton More Rose.

'Jim' might be the Jim Mead in this photograph.

Dear Aunt Hattie,

Thought I would write you a few lines tonight even though I have been looking for a letter from you every day.

After Friday I expect to be so busy I won't have chance to do anything for awhile.  150 baby chicks come then and they require an awful lot of attention the first few weeks.  I only hope I succeed in raising them.  It will be just so many more eggs next winter.

I often think how nice it is that you went to

California this winter and avoided the bitter cold weather.  I guess the average temperature of February was the lowest on record.  Jim says it was colder than any he can remember.  We haven't had much snow but I suppose we are apt to get plenty the next few weeks.

I bought the paper for the kitchen and dining rooms.  It is real nice but Walt hasn't had a chance to put it on yet.  I hope he gets it on so I can have a chance to enjoy it before "fly season" comes.  I washed those curtains that came from Peekskill; soaked them overnight in lukewarm water and was

I disappointed?  They looked fine and strong when I put them in the water but the next morning I could scarcely lift them from the water.  They just went all to pieces.  I washed the curtains I already had and put them back up.  They look real good so I'll manage very nicely.

Was up to F's as usual on Saturday.  Everyone well  but Bobbie had mumps although he didn't seem  bit sick.  I guess John wasn't very sick with them either.  One wouldn't think James had just had a bad operation.  He looks just as fat and cute

as ever.

Sunday was Vivian's birthday.  I bought her a little yellow wash dress and panties, Mrs. Van Alystine got her material for a dress, Jim brought up a little gold pin, and the Toth kids sent two tiny boxes of candy.  She was so happy and excited all day she could hardly contain herself.

Must close now and go to bed.  Five a.m. comes too quickly and I milk one cow every morning now.

Write to me soon.  I keep thinking maybe you are sick because you haven't written before.

Love,
Olive

P.S.
Bea has gone down to Clif's so guess it won't be long now.
