Born 2
November 1910 at Stamford, Delaware County, New York
Died 20 July
1972 at Rensselaer, Rensselaer County, New York
Jay was the
only child of Robert Payne Corbin and Jessie Augusta Shutts Corbin. He was
raised at Stamford where his father was a florist and his mother a teacher. In
1920, when he was ten-years old, the family relocated to Albany, New York where
his father was a private family gardener and his mother a teacher. The family
relocated to Bethlehem, New York about 1925 where his father was first a florist
and later a private estate superintendent; and, his mother a grade school
teacher. It was at Bethlehem where Jay was engaged as a switchboard installer.
The family relocated to Rensselaer about 1934 where Jay’s father was the owner
and operator of Corbin Gas Station at 1001 Washington Avenue which also served
as their home. Jay was the assistant manager of this family operated
neighborhood gas and grocery store. For a time in the early 1950s, Jay was a
railroad worker but returned to the family business by 1959. He was active in
the community as a member of Rensselaer Elks and the Rensselaer Sportman’s
Lodge. Jay died at Saint Peter’s Hospital at Rensselaer after a brief illness and was buried
at Stamford Cemetery at Stamford, presumably in the family plot there. Jay married to Mary
Dow Bryant on 22 October 1942 at Ludlow, Vermont. It is not known if Jay and
Mary had any children. I believe the marriage was brief. I do not find Mary
with Jay in any records other than their marriage record and she was not
mentioned in Jay’s obituary. Jay was my third cousin once removed.
*Note-Jay was found in two records as Jason Adelbert Corbin and in one record as Jay Adelbert Corbin.
