Maria was
the second of five children born to Edward A. More and Harriet Preston
More. Maria was raised at Roxbury where her father was a farmer. She was engaged
in the millinery business when she married to William Harrison Underwood on 11
May 1853 at Roxbury. They made their home first on Rose’s Brook at Stamford,
New York where her husband was the owner and operator of a farm. He sold this
farm about 1865 and bought another on the river flats between Hobart, New York
and South Kortright, New York. Her husband retired from farming about 1877 and
they relocated to Hobart village. A year later they purchased a home at Stamford
where they lived until her husband’s death in 1887. Maria’s niece, Jennie Grace Wheeler, came to their home about 1880 to help care for William who suffered
with dyspepsia. After his death, Maria and Jennie relocated to Harpersfield,
New York where Jennie was a dry goods clerk. Maria died while visiting at the Kingston
home of her daughter, Harriet, who had married to Oliver David Squire. Maria was remembered as a quiet,
retiring woman with good sense. She attended all the John More Association
reunions during her lifetime; 1890, 1895, and 1900. Maria
was buried with her husband at Stamford Cemetery. Maria and William were the
parents of four children; Edward A. Underwood, Jennie Eliza Underwood, Hattie
More Underwood, and Otis More Underwood. Maria was my second cousin four
times removed.
