Clifford was
the son of Harry Jacobs Gardner and Rosa Belle Chase
Gardner. He was raised at Morris, a village in Pittsfield, New York, where his
father was the owner and operator of a farm. After he graduated from Morris
High School, he relocated to Queens in New York City where he was a bookkeeper
with Consolidated Edison. During World War II, he served as a mounted security
officer. In the mid-1940s, Clifford relocated his family to Earlville, New York
where he was the manager of I. L. Richer Company at Sherburne, New York. He
later was employed by General Millwork Company at Utica, New York and was a
general manager of the Binghamton, New York branch until his retirement. He was
a member of the Sherburne Masonic Lodge and active in the Sherburne Grange. Clifford
married first to Gladys Stanhouse on 5 July 1936 at Oneonta, New York. Clifford
and Gladys were the parents of four children; two daughters and two sons. Gladys
died in 1972 and Clifford married next to widow, Virginia Ruth More Elliott on 29 December 1984 at Garrattsville, New York.
Clifford and Virginia had no children. A resident of Garrattsville, Clifford
died at Chase Memorial Nursing Home at New Berlin where he had been a patient
for about five months. His funeral was held at First Presbyterian Church at
Garrattsville and he was buried in Hillington Cemetery at Morris. Clifford was
