Delight was the younger of two children born to William Matthews Butts and Kate Champlin Butts. She was raised primarily by her mother at Grand Rapids mostly in the home of her maternal grandparents. The family, including her father, were relocated to Cleveland, Ohio by 1910 where her father was an insurance agent. Kate graduated from Central High School at Grand Rapids; attended Library School at Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio; and graduated from Lake Erie College at Painesville, Ohio with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1912. After graduating, she worked several years with Associated Charities of Cleveland. She relocated to Manhattan about 1920 where she worked with Young Men’s Christian Association and then with Henry Street Settlement on the Lower East Side. She was also associated with New York Veteran’s Bureau and with Protestant Federation. In 1924, Kate was appointed to New York Board of Education as a Visiting Teacher, Department of Ungraded Classes. For several years before her demise, she worked in the Bureau of Child Guidance as a Visiting Teacher in the unit for retarded children. Kate was active in the John More Association and served on the Committee of Memorabilia from 1930 through 1934. Delight never married. Her last known residence was at 19 East 56th Street. She died after a brief illness at Saint Claire’s Hospital in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. Her remains were interred at Fresh Pond Crematory and Columbarium at Middle Village, New York. Kate was John More Association James line cousin #62212 and was my fourth cousin twice removed.
