Catharine H. More Benham



Born 29 June 1837 at Durhamville, Oneida County, New York
Died 15 December 1915 at Newark Valley, Tioga County, New York

Catharine was the second of five children born to Andrew More and Ann Eliza Hardenbergh More. She was raised first at Durhamville where her father was the owner and operator of a tannery. About 1840, the family relocated onto a farm between Prattsville, New York and Moresville (now known as Grand Gorge), New York near Roxbury. Her mother had inherited this farm following the death of her father, Lewis Hardenbergh. Catharine married to Martinus L. Benham on 15 May 1861 at Roxbury. They made their home first at South Valley, New York where her husband was the owner and operator of a farm. South Valley is a hamlet in the south end of Roseboom, New York. The family relocated permanently to Newark Valley about 1870 where her husband was the owner and operator of a farm. Later, in addition to farming, he was a bookkeeper. He may have been a partner in a tobacco emporium at Utica, New York in the role of treasurer. Catharine and Martinus were the parents of three children; Elizabeth Benham, Charles More Benham, and Katharine “Kate” Benham. Catharine was buried at Hope Cemetery at Newark Valley. She was John More Association John Line cousin #152 and my second cousin four times removed.

-Martinus' middle name as found on some family trees was Laraway.

Helen Winifred Doud Ives



Born 3 August 1907 at North Bangor, Franklin County, New York
Died 15 January 2006 at Lake George, Warren County, New York

Helen was the daughter of Henry Irving Doud and Alice Louise Plumb Doud. She was raised at Bangor where her father was the owner and operator of a mill. The family relocated to Malone, New York about 1917 where her father was the owner and operator of a produce market. Helen became a teacher and was a music program supervisor at Middletown, New York in 1926 and 1927. She returned to Malone in 1928 where she continued her work as a music program supervisor. Helen married to Ralph Samuel Ives, Junior on 7 April 1942 at Salinas, California. As her husband was serving overseas with the United States Army, she returned to her home at Malone. Helen and Ralph were the parents of one child, Caroline Cushman Ives. Her husband died in 1944 at Saidor, Papua New Guinea. His remains were buried in the Philippines. Helen never remarried. In 1993, she resided with her sister, Alice Louise Doud, at San Luis Obispo, California. Some time after that, Alice relocated to Meriden, Connecticut and Helen relocated to Lake George. Helen is buried at North BangorCemetery at North Bangor. She is John More Association Jean Line cousin #M542132 and was the wife of my fifth cousin once removed.

Esther Faith Kimball Dales



Born 10 September 1905 at Brushton, Franklin County, New York
Died 4 July 1992 at Passaic, Passaic County, New Jersey

Esther was the daughter of Asa George Kimball and Katherine Frew Kimball. She was raised and educated at Brushton, a village in the town of Moira, New York. After graduating from Brushton High School in 1924, she earned a teaching degree from New York State College at Albany, New York. She was a public school teacher at Johnstown, New York when she married to Orrin Penfield Dales on 1 April 1929 in the Chapel of Saint Saviour at Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in Manhattan, New York. Orrin and Esther had no children. They made their home at Passaic, first on Gregory Avenue and later purchased a home at 49 Idaho Avenue. Esther was a substitute teacher and her husband was a faculty member at Passaic High School. Esther died 14-months after her husband's demise and was buried next to him at Sunnyside Cemetery in her hometown of Brushton. Many of her family and extended family are also buried at that place. Esther is John More Association Jean Line cousin #M58423 and the wife of my fourth cousin twice removed.

Dr. Orrin Penfield Dales



Born 28 November 1895 at Malden-on-Hudson, Ulster County, New York
Died 13 April 1991 at Passaic, Passaic County, New York

Orrin was more commonly known as O. Penfield Dales or Penfield Dales. He was the third of seven children born to Frederick Dales and Mary Emily Smith Dales. The family relocated to Binghamton, New York before 1900 where his father was a commercial traveler. The family relocated again about 1908 to Schenectady, New York where his father was a district insurance agent. Orrin graduated from Schenectady High School in 1914. He was teaching at East Greenbush, a suburb of Albany, New York, in 1917 when he registered for the World War I draft. That fall, he enrolled at Union College at Schenectady. He graduated in 1921 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was appointed principal of Brushton High School at Brushton, New York from 1922 through 1925. In 1926, he received a Master of Arts degree from New York State Teachers College at Albany. From 1926 to 1927, he was a student in the department of educational administration for city school superintendents at Columbia University in Manhattan, New York. In 1931, he received a doctorate in philosophy of education from New York University at Manhattan. Orrin married to Esther Faith Kimball on 1 April 1929 at Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in Manhattan. Orrin and Esther had no children. They made their home at Passaic where Orrin was a faculty member at Passaic High School. He was adviser at that school to The Dales, a club noted for its educational conferences and vocational lectures. Following his demise, he was buried at Sunnyside Cemetery at Brushton; his wife buried beside him the following year. Many of his wife’s family and extended family are also buried at this cemetery.  Orrin was John More Association Jean line cousin #58423 and my fourth cousin twice removed.

Howard Hutchinson Ganson



Born 23 February 1885 at Buffalo, Erie County, New York
Died 23 September 1949 at Buffalo, Erie County, New York

Howard was the elder of two children, both sons, born to Henry Ganson and Ann Matilda Thompson Ganson. He was raised at Buffalo where his father was first a cashier and later the owner of an asphalt paving business and later a broker. Howard was a machine shop foreman in 1910 and an office clerk in 1915. In 1920, he was a Strong Steel Foundry salesman. In the early 1900s, he was an amateur motorcycle racer and held the world championship on half-mile dirt tracks. He then became well known for his shooting ability for which he was a titled champion. Howard was also a proficient golfer. Howard married to Dorothy Stevens Decker on 14 February 1921 at Buffalo. They made their home first at 897 Delaware Avenue and later at 90 Bryant Street. He was the secretary and later a vice-president at Hygeia Nursing Bottle Company and his wife was the treasurer of the same company. The Hygeia Nursing Bottle Company was founded by his wife's father in the early 1900s. In 1945, they purchased a home at Wanakah, New York. Wanakah is a hamlet in the town of Hamburg and a part of the Buffalo-Niagara Metropolitan area. He was a past commodore of Buffalo Canoe Club and past president of Wanakah Country Club. Howard was a member of Ancient Landmark Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; Sons of the American Revolution; Buffalo Club; Buffalo Country Club; and Midday Club. Howard and Dorothy were the parents of four children; Howard Hutchinson Ganson Jr., Allison Bathgate Ganson, Dorsette Stevens Ganson, and Audrey Decker Ganson. Howard died at Buffalo General Hospital and was buried next to his wife in a Ganson family plot in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Buffalo. He is John More Association Jonas Line cousin #R44131 and the husband of my third cousin twice removed.
