Catharine H. More Benham

Born 29 June 1837 at Durhamville, Oneida County, New York
Died 15 December 1915 at Newark Valley, Tioga County, New York

Catharine was the second of five children born to Andrew More and Ann Eliza Hardenbergh More. She was raised first at Durhamville where her father was the owner and operator of a tannery. About 1840, the family relocated onto a farm between Prattsville, New York and Moresville (now known as Grand Gorge), New York near Roxbury. Her mother had inherited this farm following the death of her father, Lewis Hardenbergh. Catharine married to Martinus L. Benham on 15 May 1861 at Roxbury. They made their home first at South Valley, New York where her husband was the owner and operator of a farm. South Valley is a hamlet in the south end of Roseboom, New York. The family relocated permanently to Newark Valley about 1870 where her husband was the owner and operator of a farm. Later, in addition to farming, he was a bookkeeper. He may have been a partner in a tobacco emporium at Utica, New York in the role of treasurer. Catharine and Martinus were the parents of three children; Elizabeth Benham, Charles More Benham, and Katharine “Kate” Benham. Catharine was buried at Hope Cemetery at Newark Valley. She was John More Association John Line cousin #152 and my second cousin four times removed.
*Notes-
-Hardenbergh was found in records with various spellings.
-Martinus' middle name as found on some family trees was Laraway.
