Eleanor was
the youngest of ten children born to Robert Laraway More and Gertrude Conover More. She was raised at Durhamville where her father
was the owner of a profitable tannery business. The family relocated to
Norwalk, Connecticut about 1847 where her father was engaged in the
construction of the section of New York and New Haven Railroad from Norwalk to
Westport. The family relocated to Poughkeepsie, New York about 1849 where her
father was manager of a large mining interest. Eleanor married to Theodore Van
Tine Johnston on 4 June 1868. They made their home at 299 Mill Street at Poughkeepsie where her husband was a restaurateur.
Eleanor and Theodore were the parents of two children; Katherine Bangs Johnston
and Ella May Johnston who died at two-years of age. Eleanor's husband died in 1904
and her daughter, Katherine, became her constant companion. They traveled frequently,
including summer voyages to Europe. They sailed for Europe in May 1912
expecting to return about September. Eleanor became ill while in London and
died at Saint George’s at Hanover Square, Westminster. Her remains were
returned to America aboard the steamer Carmania and she was laid to rest with
her husband at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Eleanor served on the John More Association Permanent Committee from 1890 until her death in 1912. She was John More Association John line cousin #13.10 and my second cousin four times removed.
