Horace Vandermark Schloss

Born 1 October 1898 at Walton, Delaware County, New York
Died 8 April 1947 at Granton, Delaware County, New York

Horace was the son of Horace Baldwin Schloss and Clauda Udalia Vandermark Schloss. He was raised at Walton where his father was the owner and operator of a farm at Carcass Brook. He was employed by Paul Finch at Walton in 1918 as a farmer when he registered for the World War I military draft. In 1919, he enlisted in Company I, 10th Infantry, New York Guard. He was discharged from service in 1932. Horace was a silk weaver when he married to Ellen Eusebia Smith, a teacher at Bovina, New York, on 29 June 1921 at Bovina Center, New York. They made their home at Walton where Horace was later the owner and operator of a filling station and taxi service. Horace was on his way to Deposit, New York on a taxi service request when his car hit a tree near Granton, New York and he was killed. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was described as possessing a courteous and congenial demeanor. He was a member of the Walton United Presbyterian Church, Walton Fire Department Company 5, and Club Royale. Horace and Ellen were the parents of four children; Marion Virginia Schloss, twins June Helen Schloss and Jean Harriet Schloss, and Marjorie Claudia Schloss. Horace was buried in a Welton family plot at Walton Cemetery. He was the husband of my fourth cousin twice removed.
*Note-Granton, once known as Carpenter’s Eddy, was a settlement between Cannonsville and Rock Rift. The community was sacrificed in the early 1960s to make way for the Cannonsville Reservoir which holds water for the use of residents in New York City.
