Mary Hughes More

Born 23 October 1838 at Hobart, Delaware County, New York
Died 23 July 1916 at Walton, Delaware County, New York

This image of Mary was made in 1909 and published in the November 1917 issue of The Historical Journal of the More Family.

Mary was one of ten children born to Irish immigrant, Patrick Hughes, and New York native, Elizabeth Grant Hughes. Mary’s father was a native of Monahan, Ireland. His cousin, also named Patrick Hughes, was Archbishop of New York. Mary’s mother was the daughter of Captain Jim Grant, who served in the War of 1812, having come from Scotland in early infancy. Two of Mary's sisters also married into the More family. Elizabeth Hughes was the second wife of John Line cousin, Wilson Page More; and, Margaret Grant Hughes married to John Line cousin, David More Peck.

Mary was raised at Hobart, a village in the Town of Stamford, New York, where her father was a carriage maker and wagon maker. Mary attended the Albany Normal School at Albany, New York and for a time, was a successful teacher. Mary married to Edmund More on 13 October 1863 at Hobart, New York. Mary and Edmund were the parents of three children; John Grant More, David More, and Edmund More, Jr. They made their home at Walton in the household of her husband’s parents, David More and Elizabeth Gould More; and where her husband worked to further promote the success of the family farm. It wasn’t until about 1880 that there were no extended family members residing with them. Her husband retired from farming about 1905 and, about 1910, they relocated to 31 Liberty Street in Walton. The Tuesday before she died, Mary suffered a paralytic stroke and passed away quietly and without suffering the following Sunday morning at her home. She was remembered for her cheerful disposition and a valued helper and counselor to her husband and sons. To the end of her life, she kept herself young in spirit, retaining her companionship with her grandchildren in college by sharing their new interests. She had a keen sense of humor and her interest in people was kindly and genuine. Mary was buried in a More family plot at Walton Cemetery. She was the wife of my first cousin five times removed.

Grave photos obtained myself on 10 August 2015. In the More family plot photo, Mary's grave is  in the second row. Of the two tall stones, hers is to the right and behind the grave markers of Jason Gould More and Adelia Sinclair, fifth and sixth markers respectively, in the first row.
