William Pitt More

Born 1 August 1823 at Roxbury, Delaware County, New York
Died 6 July 1893 at Walton, Delaware County, New York

William was the ninth of thirteen children born to David More and Elizabeth Gould More. William was raised at the More Settlement where his father was the owner and operator of a 165 acre farm. His father relocated the family to the Hardscrabble community of Roxbury about 1835 when he purchased a farm there of 164 acres. In 1839, William’s father relocated the family permanently to Walton where he had purchased a farm of 196 acres on the Delaware River. About 1840 or 1841, William worked in the livestock business at Chicago, Illinois but had returned to Walton by 1850. William married to Ursula Jones on 16 March 1854 at Walton. William and Ursula had no children. They made their home at Walton where William was the owner and operator of a farm. He was remembered as jovial with a generous disposition. After the death of his wife in 1891, he was cared for by his brother Edmund More until his own death in 1893 of a fever, though he suffered with dementia. He was buried next to his wife in a More family plot at Walton Cemetery. He was my first cousin five times removed.

All photographs obtained myself on 10 August 2015. In the plot photo, William's grave marker is in the second row, third from the left, behind the marker for his father, David More. Ursula's grave marker, second from left in the second row, is not seen in this photo; it is blocked from view by the marker of her father-in-law, David More.
