William Harland Nichols

Born 24 April 1917 at Franklin, Delaware County, New York
Died 19 October 2000 at Oxford, Chenango County, New York

William was the son of Harry Nichols and Margaret Catherine DuMond Nichols. He was raised at Franklin where his father was the owner and operator of a dairy farm. In 1941, William traveled to Albany, New York to enlist in the United States Army. He was assigned to Infantry and sent to Belgium where, in 1944, he was captured by German forces and held as a Prisoner of War. He was freed from captivity at war’s end in 1945 and discharged from service three months later to return home. William married to Florence Elizabeth More on 23 November 1945 at Afton, New York. They made their home at Walton, New York where he supported his family as a carpenter. Florence and William were the parents of four children; all daughters. William was active in his community as a member of Frank Mead Eells Post 270 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Truman C. Toby Post 32 American Legion. William died in 2000 at New York State Veterans Home at Oxford. He was buried in a Nichols family plot at Walton Cemetery. William was the husband of my third cousin twice removed.
