Robert was
the eldest of three children born to Robert Bruce Smith and Amelia Belle Lazear Smith. He was raised at Pickering Township in the
city of Bottineau where his father was engaged in the mercantile business. His
mother died in 1921 when Robert was seven-years of age and his father married
to Viola Eleanor Hermann the following year. The family relocated to Winkler,
Montana where his father was the owner of Winkler Motor Company and Ford
Agency. His father died in 1926 when Robert was 12-years of age. He and his
sister, May Lazear Smith, became wards of their maternal aunt, Ida May Lazear Tuthill, and her husband, Wilmarth John Tuthill, and
relocated to Goshen, New York where their uncle was the owner and operator of a
general farm. Robert married to Mary Ellen Van Vliet on 23 October 1938 at
Goshen. They made their home at Catskill where Robert was a retail grocery
clerk. I found no information about the family after 1940. Robert and Mary were
the parents of two children, both daughters. Robert was buried at Town of Catskill Cemetery. He is John More Association Jean Line cousin #5.10.181 and
my fourth cousin, twice removed.
