Edwin Ben Howell

Born 17 September 1851 at Moresville, Delaware County, New York
Died 4 February 1888 at San Diego, San Diego County, California

Edwin was the fourth of six children born to Orrin Day Howell and Cornelia More Howell. He was born at Moresville which is now known as Grand Gorge and he was raised at nearby Roxbury, New York where his father was a physician. The family relocated to Aurora, Illinois about 1858 where his father practiced medicine. Edwin studied medicine at Vienna, Austria; Paris, France; Prague, Czech Republic; and London, England. He received his medical degree from Chicago Medical College of Northwestern University at Chicago, Illinois in 1876. Edwin married to Etoile Elizabeth Coulter on 18 November 1875 at Paris, France. They had grown up as neighbors and both attended Jennings Seminary at Aurora. They made their home first at Aurora where he was a physician. They relocated to San Diego about 1885 when Edwin's health began to fail with the hope that a milder climate would be restorative. Edwin was active in his community and a charter member, as well as elected Recorder, of San Diego Commandery, Number 25, Knights Templar. Edwin and Etoile had no children.
