Grace Stevens Preston

Born 25 August 1896 at Roxbury, Delaware County, New York
Died 23 June 1974 at Roxbury, Delaware County, New York

Grace was the second of four children born to Bruce Smith Preston and Carrie Eugenia Stevens Preston. Grace was raised at Roxbury where her father was primarily a carpenter. She graduated from Roxbury Central School in 1915 and Oneonta Normal College at Oneonta, New York in June 1917. She was first a high school teacher at Roxbury but taught the majority of her career at public schools at Springfield, Massachusetts. Grace maintained two households most of her adult life; one in Roxbury where she would reside during school vacations, and one in Springfield. Grace traveled extensively by airplane, train, and ship. She visited cities and states across America and visited many countries such as Bermuda, Nova Scotia, Greece, Turkey, Scotland, England, Canada, and Mexico. Grace was active in her community. She was a member of the Abigail Harper Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Roxbury Central School Alumni Association, Roxbury Reading Club, and Garden Club; and, an elected trustee of Roxbury Library Association. Grace was an active member of the John More Association. She was a member of the Executive Committee for the Jean Line beginning in 1934. She worked on the 1935 Reunion Entertainment Committee, the 1940 Reunion Memorabilia Chairman and member of the Bridge Committee. She provided valuable assistance, as a member of the Advisory Committee, to Grace Van Dyke More, editor of Chronicles of the More Family published in 1955. Grace never married. She is buried next to the graves of her parents at United Methodist Church Cemetery at Roxbury.
