Jean More Smith

Jean “Jane” More Smith

Born 3 April 1780 at Catskill, Greene County, New York
Died 5 June 1861 at Roxbury, Delaware County, New York

Jean was the fifth of eight children, and the only daughter, born to Scottish immigrant parents, John More and Elizabeth “Betty” Taylor More. Jean was born at Catskill where her parents had sought refuge from Indians and Tories in the early years of the American Revolution. About 1786, the family returned to Delaware County. Her father traded his original claim for what became Moresville and is now known as Grand Gorge. Jean married to Scottish immigrant David Smith in 1795 at Roxbury. David had purchased a tract of land adjoining that of Jean’s brother, Robert, and that is where they made their home. About 1830, they exchanged farms with John Frisbee, the husband of their daughter, Anna, just below the village of Roxbury and west of the Delaware River. During her last years, after the death of her husband, she was cared for in the home of her daughter, Cornelia, who had married to Ezekiel Preston. Jean and David were the parents of twelve children; John More Smith, Maria Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Anna Smith, James Smith, Cornelia Laraway Smith, David More Smith, William Henry Smith, Jane Smith, Jonas More Smith, Hannah Jennett Smith, and Robert Bruce Smith.
