Robert Lowe Hirshberg

Robert Lowe Hirshberg

Born 10 April 1919 at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio
Died 21 March 2010 at Adamstown, Frederick County, Maryland

Robert was the first of four sons born to Herbert Simon Hirshberg and Blanche A. Lowe Hirshberg and the elder brother to twin, Richard Lowe Hirshberg. Robert was raised first at Adams, Ohio where his father was a public librarian. The family relocated to Cleveland Heights, Ohio about 1930 where his father was a Case Western Reserve University dean. Robert graduated in 1940 from Oberlin College at Oberlin, Ohio with a degree in political science. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of Lieutenant. Robert married to Charlotte Marion Meloney (more commonly known as Marion) on 30 April 1949 at Douglaston, New York. That same year, he graduated from George Washington University Law School. They made their home first at Washington, District of Columbia. In 1951, he was stationed briefly at Athens, Greece where he helped administer the Marshall Plan with the Economic Cooperation Administration. In 1955, he started work at the Commerce Department at Washington and rose to a position of director. Robert and Marion relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland about 1958 and, in 1965; he graduated from George Washington University with a master’s degree in international affairs. He retired from government work in 1974 and was then employed by American Trade and Finance Company for whom he helped the government of Switzerland secure contracts with the United States military. He retired permanently in 1984. Robert and Marion relocated to Adamston in 2002 while also keeping a home at Washington. Robert died at the Adamston home as a result of arteriosclerotic vascular disease. Robert and his wife Marion, who is still living at the time of this publication, were the parents of two children; a daughter still living and Robin More Hirshberg Porter. Robert was buried in a More-Trask family plot at Walton Cemetery at Walton, New York. His wife’s mother and paternal grandparents are buried in that plot as is his daughter Robin. He was the husband of my fourth cousin twice removed.
