William Newkirk Manning

Born 10 October 1909 at Groton, Tompkins County, New York
Died 6 March 1988 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

William was the son of George Radcliffe Manning and Kate Newkirk Maycumber Manning. He was raised by his mother at Cortland, New York in the home of his maternal grandmother, Kate Newkirk Maycumber. His mother was a school teacher for a brief period of time and later was a clerk at Second National Bank. William graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1933 and was first an architect with Carl W. Clark at Cortland. He relocated to Williamsport, Pennsylvania about 1940 where he continued his work as an architect. William married to Pauline Barnes Carpenter on 6 November 1943 at Ithaca, New York. They made their home first at that place where his wife was a librarian at Cornell University and William commuted to Buffalo, New York for his work as an architect. They relocated to Pittsburgh about 1946 where their only child, a daughter, was born. William retired in 1974 and worked as a freelance architectural specifications writer until 1978 when failing eyesight required him to enjoy a full retirement. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and a charter member of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute. He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. William died of a heart attack at his home in the Shadyside neighborhood of East Pittsburgh and was buried in the Manning family plot at Cortland Cemetery at Cortland, New York. William was my fifth cousin once removed.
